Celebration

A celebration of cultures

As Ramadan reached its conclusion, Syrian residents within East Ayrshire hosted a ‘Celebration of Cultures’ event at Storm In A Teacup Café in Kilmarnock Railway Station.

Tables were weighed down with exotic Syrian foods and drinks and there were demonstrations on the art of tea pouring from Syria, when the teapot is placed at a great height above the cup.

Many Syrian residents attend the café on a weekly basis to practice and develop their English language skills. They decided to invite guests from other groups who attend the café and also members of Kilmarnock Station Railway Heritage Trust along to the event where special guests were Ms Leitch, Principal Teacher of Art at Grange Academy and S6 senior pupils.

Those who attended were particularly interested in learning more about Syrian culture such as making and putting on the hijab, patchwork and weaving.

Lucy Crossley, an S6 pupil at Grange Academy said: “The celebration event was enlightening and a beautiful blend of cultures”, while fellow pupil Heather Graham added: “We thoroughly enjoyed interacting with people with different lifestyles and learning new things.”
