Action packed STEM events held across East Ayrshire

Exciting STEM events have been taking place in schools across East Ayrshire with over 1500 P6 and P7 children benefitting from the extensive programme.

The events, organised by Gary Neilson, ICT co-ordinator in partnership with the Council’s IT Service, involved educators including VEX robotics – a leader in educational robotics, and the National Robotarium, the UK’s centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence based at Heriot-Watt University.

The children were encouraged to think about future careers and learned new skills including coding, and experienced virtual reality headsets.

Councillor Elaine Cowan, Spokesperson for Education, and Children and Young People attended Lainshaw Primary with local members Councillors John McGhee and Ellen Freel. She said: “It was really interesting to attend Lainshaw Primary and learn about the developments in robot technology just in the last couple of years, and it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm, confidence and creativity of the children as they navigated the world of technology.

“These events really show a full learning journey from constructing robots to applying block-based coding. I would like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes making them such a huge success.”

STEM events have taken place at Doon Academy, The Robert Burns Academy, Galston Primary, Lainshaw Primary, Grange Academy, Kilmarnock Academy and St Joseph’s Academy.
