Ayrshire U17 district netball squad at the performance finals in Edinburgh

Ayrshire comes second in national competition!

The Ayrshire District U17 Netball squad has had an incredibly successful season finishing second to Edinburgh District at the National Performance Finals held recently in Edinburgh.

The team of 16 young women namely - Aminata, Hannah, Isla, Kirsty, Rihanna, Martha and Lucy from Stewarton Academy; Kayleigh and Kate from Garnock Community Campus; Natasha and Olivia from Prestwick Academy; Jess from Kilmarnock Academy, Naomi from Loudon Academy, Freya from Queen Margaret Academy and Sophia and Maddie from Wellington School – had their most successful season in history in the lead up to the Performance Finals, winning all ten games in their South region group stage.

This was the first time the squad had reached the finals and they were up against Orkney, Glasgow and Edinburgh District teams. The games were tough but the Ayrshire team rose to the occasion taking second place against an experienced Edinburgh side.

The player’s player of the day was Natasha from Prestwick Academy while the coaches’ player of the day was Aminata from Stewarton Academy.

Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, Education and Skills and Culture said: “What an incredible and historic achievement from our young people and their coaches, which includes Clare Wilson a senior manager from the East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, to reach the Performance Finals in Edinburgh. They were all outstanding on the day, showing the commitment and determination that got them to the final and secured second place.

“I am very pleased to offer my congratulations to the whole team. We are incredibly proud of your achievements.”
