Carson’s design wins school meal mascot competition!
Is it a bird, is it a plane.....no it’s a tattie – Super Tattie, the Council’s new school meal mascot.
Earlier this year, Catering Services launched a competition for all primary and special school children and young people. They were looking for a new mascot that would appear on school meal menus and all branding. The children and young people were asked to let their imaginations run wild and they did!
Almost 500 entries were received and Chris Walker, Food Services Manager and Rhona Connolly, Graphic Designer had the unenviable task of creating a shortleet of 20 for the judging panel, led by Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning, Education and Skills and Culture.
Councillor Elaine Cowan said: “Judging the school meal mascot competition was a real honour and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the final entries. We fully considered all the wonderful designs before selecting the winner - ‘Super Tattie’ - created by Carson from Dalmellington Primary School.
“We all loved the concept of a super Ayrshire tattie. Tatties are so versatile, they can be turned into the most delicious meal, added to soup; they are affordable and can be easily grown at home.
“It was brilliant to meet Carson and Head Teacher Fiona Greig and to present the school with their prize of £250.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our runners up who each won £50 for their schools - Leah from P4 at Darvel PS with Sam Witch the sandwich mascot, and Pyper from P3/4 at St Sophia’s PS with Lisa Pizza.”

The Council’s Catering Services use organic, local and seasonal produce wherever possible and have designated meat-free days. All meat on offer is sourced from local butchers and the chicken is Red Tractor assured. Main meals and snacks are served with two fresh seasonal vegetables/fresh salad and a piece of fruit. A pick and mix sandwich option is offered daily with salad dishes, yoghurt, fresh fruit and free bread.
