Celebrating Learning Disability Awareness Week

A mix of sports, music and partnership working made up the events that were held across East Ayrshire to mark Learning Disability Awareness Week which celebrates the inclusion of people with learning disabilities in our communities.

Now in its fifteenth year, the week featured a Football Fun Day at Cumnock Juniors which was rounded off with an awards presentation and disco. There was also an information event at North West Area Centre in Kilmarnock where people could find out what’s happening in East Ayrshire to support people with learning disabilities, and a Partnership in Practice event at St Kentigern’s Church in Kilmarnock which was for all workers and organisations who are interested in finding out about what is available to help people with learning disabilities. Delegates at the event were treated to a rousing performance of ‘The Greatest Showman’ classic ‘A Million Dreams’ by the East Ayrshire Council’s Workplace Choir.

Councillor Iain Linton, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “Learning Disability Awareness Week serves as a platform to share with the wider community the skills, talents and attributes of people with learning disabilities. The week has featured a very enjoyable series of events which have highlighted all of the excellent work that goes on across East Ayrshire and between partner agencies to help people with learning disabilities.”

Another Learning Disability Week will run in June which will feature free showcase nights at Cumnock Town Hall on Tuesday 18 June and Stewarton Area Centre on Thursday 20 June, both at 7pm.

On top of that, there will be an all ability Ayrshire Highland Games on Wednesday 19 June starting at 10am at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena. The launch of Keep Safe in East Ayrshire will also take place on 28 June at Cumnock Town Hall.
