Changes to your bin collection service
A new bin collection service will be rolled out in two phases starting in Cumnock and the surrounding area from May 2026, and Kilmarnock and the surrounding area from October.
The new collection service will see the recycling trolley replaced with three separate wheeled bins for paper and cardboard, plastics and cans, and glass. Each of the new bins, along with the general waste bin, will be collected once every four weeks, while the food caddy will be collected weekly alongside.
The trolley will be removed after its last collection, and the new bins will be delivered between Monday and Friday of the changeover week. This means that the new bins could be delivered before the trolley is removed or a few days after the trolley has been removed.
The first collection of the new service will always be general waste, followed by paper and card, plastics and cans, then glass on the same day each week.
Garden waste bins will be collected as normal every four weeks, March to November, with the purchase of an annual permit.
A new online calendar and resident’s app is being finalised that will show the new bin collection days and the week that the new collection will start. Please wait for the calendar to be updated before contacting the Council for information about the new service.
Councillor Jim McMahon, Spokesperson for Housing, Transport and Communities said: “The new bin collection service was agreed at a meeting of Full Council in August 2024. This followed a detailed and very thorough review of waste management services, which allowed us to overhaul the recycling service that we deliver to our communities now and in the future.
“The new service will ensure that the Council is in a position to provide improved recycling at the kerbside thanks to an investment of over £10 million in new vehicles and infrastructure that will lead to significant savings of £1.7m a year.
“We know that some people will be delighted to get rid of their trolley while others will have reservations about having four wheelie bins. If you have a small garden or no outdoor space at your home and are concerned about where to place your new bins please email communitywasteofficer@east-ayrshire.gov.uk and a community waste officer will survey your property.
“A leaflet has been included in your council tax letter explaining the new service and there is also detailed information online. I would ask that you wait till the new calendar is available before contacting the Council about your new service.”
The first collection of the new service will take place during the week of Monday 18 May.
Cumnock and Netherthird will be first to receive the new service.
In June, the new service will be rolled out to Auchinleck, Dalrymple, Patna, Dalmellington, Bellsbank, Littlemill, Rankinston and Drongan.
