Merchant Navy Day 2021

Council marks Merchant Navy Day

East Ayrshire Council hoisted the Red Ensign, or ‘Red Duster’, to mark Merchant Navy Day and to support Merchant Navy seafarers.

Fly the Red Ensign is an annual campaign, run by The Seafarers’ Charity, to honour the brave men and women who kept the UK afloat during both World Wars and to highlight our dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are responsible for more than 90% of the UK’s imports.

Depute Provost Sally Cogley said: “We were pleased to support Merchant Navy Day which provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the real importance of our merchant shipping industry.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on Merchant Navy communities, and many continue to need urgent support. The Seafarers’ Charity is hoping to raise vital funds to help respond to the increased need for support.

“We have always been a significant and successful maritime nation and it's important to recognise the work of our merchant fleet both now and in the future."
