Council marks Ukraine Independence Day
East Ayrshire Council marked Ukraine Independence Day today by raising the country’s flag in front of families and individuals from Ukraine who have been welcomed to safety in East Ayrshire.
As well as commemorating 31 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the day also marks six months since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
So far, more than 80 people have been provided with homes in East Ayrshire and families have been settling well into their new communities.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, said: “It was an honour to be able to mark this important day for the people of Ukraine with the families who are now living in East Ayrshire. The day takes on such extra poignance this year given the tragedy of the Russian invasion and our thoughts go to all of the people of Ukraine who have lost loved ones or are still living through the conflict.
“Our thanks go to the many residents in East Ayrshire who have so generously opened their homes to families and individuals who have had to flee their country, and to everyone in our communities who have been so welcoming. We will continue to stand by and celebrate the Ukrainian community, and to do everything we can to make them feel safe, secure and supported within East Ayrshire.”
