East Ayrshire celebrates Learning Disability Awareness Week
A mixture of sports, games and singing made up the many events that were held across East Ayrshire to mark Learning Disability Awareness Week, seven days which celebrate the inclusion of people with learning disabilities in our communities.
Now in its nineteenth year, the week featured an All Ability Sports Day in Kilmarnock, an all-ability bike session in Cumnock, as well as karaoke, badminton and bowling. The week finished with a special showcase event in Stewarton, which was the first one to be performed since before the pandemic. Groups including Recovery Rocks, iDance, Park School pupils, UCAN, Project Search and the Happy Tappers all got the chance to display their many talents.
Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Mental Wellbeing, said: “Learning Disability Awareness Week is a chance for people with learning disabilities in our communities to really shine. It allows them to share their skills, talents and attributes and it’s fantastic to hear how much they’ve enjoyed this week’s events. The week has also highlighted all of the excellent work that goes on across East Ayrshire and between partner agencies to help people with learning disabilities.”
