Garden competition is blooming marvellous!
East Ayrshire Council’s annual garden competition recognises amateur gardeners from across East Ayrshire who have brought colour and beauty to their communities.
At a special ceremony held at the Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock, the winners were presented with their trophies and awards.
The trophy for best private garden in East Ayrshire was presented to Mrs Nisbet of Hazel Avenue, Kilmarnock and the trophy for best council garden in East Ayrshire was presented to Mrs Orr of Commonhead Road, Kilmarnock.
The gardeners were recognised for their spectacular colours, clever planting and creative garden design.
The task of judging the overall winners for Council and private gardens fell to Bruce Cuthbertson and Lynn Graham from the East Ayrshire Federation, while the three areas – Cumnock and Doon Valley, Kilmarnock Central and North, and Kilmarnock South and Irvine Valley– were judged by specialists from the Council’s Greener Communities and Housing Services.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: “Since the pandemic, people have found solace in their gardens and our beautiful green spaces. I know that lots of people find gardening very therapeutic and that it helps their overall wellbeing, which makes the garden competition seem more important than ever.
“I was so disappointed not to be able to attend this year’s award ceremony and congratulate our winners personally, due to the Council meeting running over however, the team from Housing shared photographs of the winning gardens with me and I know, and admire, many of the winning gardens that I have seen while out walking and within my own Ward. They really do bring joy to so many people.
“I was also delighted that the Jennifer Elliot memorial award was presented to Mr Mitchell from Galston for best rose garden. Jennifer was a key member of the Housing team and organised the garden competition for many years. She is sorely missed by her family, friends and colleagues and this is a lovely way of ensuring that she remains part of the garden competition.
“A huge well done to everyone involved, particularly our judges Bruce Cuthbertson and Lynn Graham, who had an unenviable task; to Greener Communities and Housing Services for their hard work organising the competition and to all our gardeners who have my thanks and appreciation.”
