Grange Academy are all Ayrshire athletics champions
Grange Academy’s athletics team lifted the coveted Kevan McCrorie Excellence shield at the annual Ayrshire Athletics Competition held at Dam Park in Ayr.
With nine gold medals, six silver medals and five bronze between them, the Grange athletes, representing S1 to S3, swept aside the competition to lift the overall team shield. Brayden from S1 also won the Sean Carson Javelin Trophy with a throw of 32.05m.
St Joseph’s Academy took second place overall with a medal haul of seven golds and two bronze. Lewis received a trophy for the S2 boys 100m, which he ran in just 11.9 seconds.
Councillor Fiona Campbell, Cabinet Member for Skills and Learning said: “I am so proud of our young people who competed in the Ayrshire Athletics final at Dam Park. They competed against all the secondary schools in Ayrshire so an East Ayrshire one-two is an incredible achievement. I would also like to congratulate the teachers from Grange Academy and St Joseph’s Academy for their hard work and commitment to our young people encouraging team spirit, ambition and resilience in addition to athletic skills.
“Ayrshire has an impressive athletics legacy and as a Council we have invested in athletics. The Ayrshire Athletics Arena and the strong partnership we enjoy with the Kilmarnock Harriers is ensuring that our young people have access to the best of facilities and opportunities to succeed.
“In Cumnock, the new Barony campus, in addition to four new pitches, will have a 400m all-weather four-lane running track with six lane sprint track that will open later this year. The school will have some of the best athletics facilities in the country and our young people will have the opportunity to be the very best they can be.”
