Grange pupils star in BBC programme for Maths Week
It was ‘lights, camera, action’ at Grange Academy when the BBC dropped by to film S1 and S2 pupils being put through their mathematical paces for Maths Week Scotland.
The third annual Maths Week Scotland will take place from Monday 30 September until Sunday 6 October with competitions, events, talks and activities, all celebrating Mathematics, taking place across the country. The young people from Grange Academy were asked to be part of a BBC programme that will bring the Deputy First Minister’s Daily Maths Challenges to life, encouraging other to give Maths a go.
And of course it wouldn’t be Maths Week without Maths-mad teacher Chris Smith who will be speaking at a conference for teachers at Stirling University organised by the Mathematical Association. He will also be coordinating his much-loved ‘Maths wi nae Borders’ competition, which encourages tens of thousands of pupils to tackle fun puzzles in teams.
Mr Smith, resident geek of the Maths Department and Scottish Teacher of the Year 2018, said: "It's been a real honour to be asked by Deputy First Minister John Swinney to liaise with the BBC to film videos that will bring to life the Deputy First Minister's Daily Challenges for Maths Week Scotland.
“The problems were devised by the Scottish Mathematical Council and I roped in a fantastic bunch of our S1/2 pupils to be the stars of these videos. Aayush, Brooke, Kate, Kenyon, Olivia, Ryan and Tara were naturals in front of the camera and we can't wait to see the videos when they start to pop up every day during Maths Week Scotland. We hope that mini Mathematicians across Scotland will be encouraged to tackle the problems in class or, even better, at home."
Councillor Fiona Campbell, Cabinet Member for Skills and Learning said: “I am absolutely delighted that Deputy First Minister, John Swinney asked Chris Smith and his pupils to support Maths Week Scotland. As a Council, we are committed to raising attainment and supporting our young people to achieve their very best. Initiatives like Maths Week Scotland are wonderful. They encourage our young people to uncover the maths that we take for granted every day and see maths in a whole new light.”
