New Cumnock Primary put the wow into the World of Work
Children and young people from New Cumnock Primary School put the wow into the World of Work with fun events and activities and welcomed visitors who helped them learn more about a range of careers.
Primary 1 to 3 focused on jobs within their community and were visited by Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue fire services.
All classes learned about the work of local councillors and were given the opportunity to pose questions to three local elected members who visited the school - Councillor Jim McMahon, Councillor June Kyle and Councillor Neill Watts.
Primary 4 to 7 focused on developing skills for work and creativity, taking part in workshops delivered by Fossil Field Racing, YipWorld and Ayrshire College. The young people also benefited from a presentation by Steve Johnson from the Red Cross who spoke about the power of volunteering and how it can benefit their future employability.
Away from school - P5 enjoyed an informative trip to the Glasgow Science Centre, P4/5 travelled to Whitelees Wind Farm to learn about STEM careers, whilst P2 learned about careers in food and farming on their trip to Dumfries House.
Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, Education and Skills and Culture said: “New Cumnock Primary have had a brilliant time finding out about the World of Work and learning more about careers that may be of interest to them. I would like to thank the school for all their hard work making this happen and to everyone who took the time to visit the school and speak to our children and young people. You can’t be what you can’t see – so projects like this are so valuable for our children and young people to inspire them and encourage them to achieve.”
