Primary 6 pupils turn Danger Detectives
Almost 1300 Primary 6 pupils from East Ayrshire became danger detectives at a special learning event that focused on personal safety.
The young people learned how to react to dangerous situations, the role of the emergency services and also how to be aware of and protect vulnerable people in their communities.
They took part in a range of fun, interactive workshops including internet safety, home fire safety, road safety, countryside safety, safety on public transport, flood prevention and Hazard House.
The workshops gave all the agencies the opportunity to speak to the young people and highlight issues and dangers young people face on a daily basis.
Depute Provost Claire Leitch was joined at one of the sessions by Councillor Elena Whitham, Depute Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities and Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Member for Older People and Community Safety.
She said: “Danger Detectives is an excellent idea as it teaches young people, in practical and memorable ways, about the many dangers which may exist in all sorts of situations. Our young people are now armed with knowledge and have the confidence to protect themselves, and their friends, from potentially dangerous situations.
“I would like to thank all of our partners for taking the time to work with our young people throughout the week, to our teachers and especially our young people who had fantastic input at every session.”
The young people received a Danger Detective booklet and each school received a certificate.
Danger Detectives is delivered by Vibrant Communities in partnership with Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Stagecoach, colleagues from the across the Council including the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, Trading Standards and Environmental Health; and East Ayrshire Leisure.
