Scottish Learning Disability Week 2-8 May

Scottish Learning Disability Week takes place from Monday 2 – Sunday 8 May with the theme this year of ‘We all have human rights!’

Learning Disability Week is an opportunity to join the Scottish Commission for People with Learning Disabilities (SCLD) to raise awareness of the importance of recognising and realising the human rights of people with learning disabilities.

Last year the Scottish Government committed to the incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) as part of a Human Rights Bill for Scotland. This means that we are living in an exciting time in Scotland as disabled people’s human rights will be enshrined by Scottish Law for the first time.

You can find out more about the UNCRPD by reading ‘International agreement on the rights of disabled people‘, which is an Easy Read document explaining why the UNCRPD is so important for disabled people’s human rights.

Within East Ayrshire, the Learning Disability Partnership is encouraging you to support Scottish Learning Disability Awareness Week.  You can create and share social media posts using the hashtag #LDWeekScot2022 and you can also come along to one of the events which the Learning Disability Partnership has organised:

  • Wednesday 4 May: All Ability Sports Day, Ayrshire Athletics Arena, Kilmarnock, 10.30am-2pm
  • Thursday 5 May: All Ability Sports Day, Cumnock Juniors, 10am-12pm
  • Friday 6 May: Information Stall, Farmfoods, Cumnock, 10am-12pm
