SL33’s Summer Programme is a spectacular success
Kilmarnock’s Skills and Learning 33 (SL33) welcomed young people from across East Ayrshire recently for a certificate presentation marking the completion of the summer programme.
SL33’s summer programme is for young people who are leaving school with no confirmed destination or who are at risk of not sustaining their intended destination.
Led by the Council’s Employability Manager, Margorie Harvie, the event was a real celebration of summer with a Hawaiian theme, including mocktails, a disco and fun photo backdrops for selfies.
Councillor Elaine Cowan, Spokesperson for Education, and Children and Young People attended the celebration event and she was joined by East Ayrshire Council’s Chief Executive Joe McLachlan, Linda McAulay-Griffiths, Director of Education and Skills, and Blair Millar, Head of Housing and Communities, along with partners from the Scottish Government, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and other Council services.
Throughout the eight-week programme, 18 young people worked towards SCQF Level 4 Wellbeing awards, which explored all aspects of wellbeing, and they also had the opportunity to enhance their social wellbeing through trips and activities including trips to the beach, bowling, and a day trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park.
At the celebration event, Sarah and Callum highlighted the personal benefits from taking part in the programme including the chance to meet new people, gaining a routine over the summer, and improving their confidence. In addition to the Summer Programme presentations, several other awards were presented to young people and adults from the Outdoor Amenities Apprenticeship programme, the Supported Employability programme, and the Parental Employability Service.

The summer programme has clearly benefitted a number of young people in so many different ways and will ensure that they continue to be supported in their next destination.
“This wouldn’t be possible without our education and employability teams, our external partners, and our local employers. Let’s continue to work together to make sure that young people throughout East Ayrshire can reach their full potential."
