Sorn Primary community ceilidh

Sorn Primary celebrates 175 years!

East Ayrshire’s oldest school – Sorn Primary celebrated their 175th anniversary in style with a community ceilidh at Sorn Castle.

Founded in 1850, the primary school has been at the heart of the village educating generations of local families. The ceilidh brought together staff, parents and carers, members of the local community; local elected members, Councillor Alyson Simmons and Councillor William Lennox and, of course, the children from the school.

Head Teacher Jennifer MacKay said: “On Friday we held a wonderful celebration of Sorn Primary at Sorn Castle. It was an incredibly special evening starting with all our guests being piped into the ceilidh by local piper, and former pupil, Aron Hewitt before the dancing and fun began.

“We are incredibly proud of our history and our place in our local community. We often say that we feel less like a school and more like a family, and that is how Friday felt. A celebration, not just of our proud history but our community and most importantly our children.”
