Sorn Primary celebrates recent inspection report
Sorn Primary School has received the results of their recent inspection, published on Tuesday 18 November, by Education Scotland.
The school was inspected last month by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) over the course of a week. In their report the inspectors highlighted key strengths, including the school’s strong focus on developing children’s skills and providing meaningful contexts for their learning, and the well developed approach to meeting children’s learning, and social and emotional needs.
Headteacher, Jenny MacKay, was praised by inspectors for providing effective leadership and direction. Her enthusiasm and passion for the school was noted in the report and that her leadership meant that all staff provided innovative and creative approaches to children’s learning, which ensured that all children were well behaved, confident, making good progress and proud of their school.
Councillor Elaine Cowan, Spokesperson for Education, and Children and Young People visited the school to congratulate Headteacher Jenny MacKay and her team, along with Councillor Linda Mabon, local member Councillor William Lennox, and Assistant Director of Education, Graham McGinn.
Councillor Cowan said: “I was very pleased to visit Sorn Primary on a beautiful winter’s morning to congratulate Headteacher Jenny MacKay and the whole school on their positive report.
“From speaking to the teaching and support staff, and to the children and young people, about the inspection and it was clear just how much this report means to them all. It was also clear that the children were confident and had great pride in their school, which was really lovely to see.”
Headteacher Jenny MacKay said: “The inspectors from Education Scotland joined us for a week last month and participated in all aspects of school life. The children had a really important role to play in the inspection process, meeting and talking with the inspectors.
“Sorn Primary, which is East Ayrshire’s oldest school, has been at the heart of the local community for 175 years. We like to think of ourselves as a family, and I think that was reflected in our report. The pride everyone feels – children, staff, parents and carers – in our school is key to ensuring that our children enjoy their learning and develop as confident, capable individuals.
“Our report is a credit to our children and of course, the dedicated staff who work tirelessly to ensure that our children feel safe and secure at school and are enabled to reach their full potential. The enthusiasm from our parents and carers, which was identified in their questionnaires and an incredibly positive meeting with the inspectors, is exceptional and we are extremely grateful for everything they do to support us.
“All of the areas for improvement are concerned with continual development of aspects which are already in place which is incredibly positive. The inspection process was an extremely helpful and productive experience for us all and we look forward to continual improvement in partnership with Education Services.”
