Stewarton Academy are Scottish Champions!
Stewarton Academy has been crowned Scottish Schools Curling Champions 2022 beating 15 teams from across Scotland to lift the prestigious title.
The championship, which took place at Curl Aberdeen earlier this month, saw the Stewarton Academy team of Skip Amy, Third Ewan, Second Holly and Lead Libby, secure an impressive 13-0 quarter final win over Forfar Academy and an equally impressive 12-1 win over Kinross High School to reach the final.
The team had only lost one game in the section stage and that was to Perth Academy, who they then faced in the final match. Starting without hammer, the first end was blanked but Stewarton stole a two then a single in the second and third ends to take a commanding lead at the halfway point in the match. Perth would take a single in the fourth but Stewarton then went on to score two in the fifth and steal a single in the last end to complete a 6 - 1 victory.
Head Teacher, John Stuart said: “I could not be prouder of our young people who showed skill, determination and real mental strength to lift the Scottish Schools Curling Championship title for 2022. Amy, Ewan, Holly and Libby are a credit to their families, our school and our community.
“It has been 28 years since Stewarton Academy won this trophy! Holly’s dad and uncle were in the 1994 team of Skip Brian Smith, Third Neil Wilson, Second Stuart Smith and Lead Alastair Smith. To say this victory was emotional for everyone involved is an understatement.
“Congratulations to the whole team and their families, it’s a fantastic achievement.”
