Travel summit discusses improving accessibility across Ayrshire
East Ayrshire Council held a special pan-Ayrshire Equalities Forum last week with a special focus on travel and how best to improve connectivity, accessibility, and sustainability across Ayrshire.
Representatives from Stagecoach, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), ScotRail, Network Rail, Ayrshire Roads Alliance, Community Transport, and Active Travel gathered at Council HQ to share their expertise and discuss the challenges and opportunities involved in our transport networks, particularly for people with disabilities.
Some of the topics discussed included assistance on trains for wheelchair users; inclusive information for passengers; anti-social behaviour on buses; and ways in which BSL users can access community transport.
Councillor Neal Ingram, Cabinet Spokesperson for Equalities and Inclusion, said: “We were pleased to host this special Equalities Forum on travel and are grateful to everyone who contributed to the productive discussion on what is an important topic for many different communities across Ayrshire.
“Getting to where you need to go should be easy for everyone, however it is clear that many face barriers when it comes to accessing essential public services.
“Listening to the needs of our communities is the first step in creating a more connected and inclusive future. I look forward to seeing progress being made on the issues that were discussed at the summit.”
