Veterans Breakfast Club brings people together
East Ayrshire Catering Services has been working closely with the Kilmarnock Branch of Legion Scotland providing a breakfast club for veterans and their families.
The breakfast club is held every second Sunday on the month at the former Kirkstyle Primary School. Since it launched last year, it has proved to be very successful and is now attracting over 30 people who are enjoying a delicious cooked breakfast and a chat with friends.
Provost Jim Todd said: “As a service veteran, this cause is very close to my heart. I work with Legion Scotland on a regular basis, supporting the charity in any way I can. I thought that a breakfast club would be a great way of bringing veterans and their families together while helping the Kilmarnock branch to attract new members.
“We held the first breakfast club last November and there was a great turn-out. There was so much interest in fact that the club is now held monthly. The Council’s Catering Service team, led by Mark Hunter, a former leading chef with the Royal Navy, run the club along with volunteers to provide a delicious breakfast and a warm welcome.
“I would like to thank everyone who is working hard to make this breakfast club a success, particularly our Catering Services team, our volunteers, Poppy Scotland and Legion Scotland. The next step is to forge closer links with the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club, reaching out to veterans around the world.”
The next Kilmarnock breakfast club will be held on Sunday 14 July at 10am at the former Kirkstyle Primary School, Carron Avenue, Kilmarnock, KA1 3NF. There is no membership required and veterans from across Ayrshire are very welcome to attend with their families. Breakfast costs just £5 per person.
