Willowbank School and Riccarton Early Childhood Centre recognised for their environmental work
Willowbank School has just achieved their eighth Green Flag Award while Riccarton Early Childhood Centre (ECC) has achieved their seventh Green Flag Award; proving they are leading the way with awareness of and care for the environment.
Willowbank School was the first additional support needs (ASN) school to earn a Green Flag Award in 2007 and has managed to sustain and renew the requirements every two years since, which is an inspirational track record. They have participated in litter initiatives and environmental projects led by their Eco Committee.
Riccarton ECC earned their seventh Green Flag Award for their work to embed Learning for Sustainability within the curriculum to help children’s understanding of climate change and how they can contribute to a greener, healthier and climate resilient future.
Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, Education and Skills and Culture said: “We’re all very proud of the achievements of the children and young people from Willowbank School and Riccarton ECC in both gaining this flag once more. This international award recognises a commitment to the Keep Scotland Beautiful Eco-Schools programme and engaging whole school communities in climate action
“An important part of the award was the children and young people working on projects that led them to build strong links with the community. They’ve won hearts and minds with their eco-friendly example and it’s given us all inspiration to do our bit for the planet. They both deserve to fly the flag!”
The Green Flag Award is based on the Seven Elements that make up the core of all Eco-Schools across the world – Eco-Committee, Environmental Review, Action Plan, Measuring, Linking to the Curriculum, Community and Eco Code.
