Ayrshire Roads Alliance continues to deliver savings, investment and improved transport infrastructure
The Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) is continuing to deliver significant benefits for communities across East and South Ayrshire through investment in transport infrastructure, active travel, service efficiency and long-term financial sustainability.
A report to Council last week on the ARA Service Plan for 2026/27 and the Performance Report for 2025/26 highlighted that the shared roads and transportation service for East and South Ayrshire Councils remains focused on improving road and transport services while delivering value for money. Since its formation, the partnership has exceeded its original savings target of £8.634 million, achieving substantial efficiencies that have supported frontline service delivery and investment in local infrastructure.
Major projects continue to progress across East and South Ayrshire including:
- continuing to prepare details for developing an integrated Local Transport Strategy across East and South Ayrshire
- implementing a parking strategy for Kilmarnock, Ayr, Prestwick and Troon
- continuing to improve condition of roads network, bridges and street lighting
- supporting and contributing to Ayrshire Growth Deal, and Regional and National Transport Strategies
Plans to transform Burns Statue Square in Ayr also continue to move forward as part of the wider Ayr Town Centre regeneration programme. The project will create a high-quality public space with improved pedestrian connections, enhanced accessibility and attractive public realm features. The UK Government has approved the reallocation of £16 million of Local Regeneration Fund investment to support this project.
ARA is also continuing to strengthen its commitment to active travel and sustainable transport and has established dedicated community and member working groups to help shape future active travel infrastructure and encourage greater community participation in project development. Recent successes include continued support for the Foregate Mobility Hub in Kilmarnock and the Prestwick to Barassie active travel route, both recognised as strategically important projects that will improve connectivity and encourage more sustainable travel choices.
Investment in staff, depots and facilities continues to improve operational efficiency across the service. Recent improvements include ongoing depot modernisation, rationalisation of fleet resources and new capital investment in depot facilities, including plans for a new salt dome at Gauchalland Depot.
Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Spokesperson for Housing, Transport and Communities, said: “Since its inception over 12 years ago, the Ayrshire Roads Alliance has achieved a significant amount and shown how well the integrated operating model can work in terms of providing an excellent platform for service delivery.
“Significant challenges lie ahead in terms of maintaining a high level of performance whilst dealing with financial pressures and their impact on service delivery. However, through continued collaboration, investment and innovation, the Alliance remains committed to delivering safe, sustainable and resilient roads and transportation services for our communities across East and South Ayrshire.”
