Road casualty trends on A76 discussed at Cabinet
Elected members discussed the issue of road casualty trends at Cabinet this week and agreed that much more needs to be done to prevent an increasing number of casualties and fatalities on the A76.
Out of the nine fatal road accidents that occurred in 2024, three of these took place on the A76 trunk road network for which Transport Scotland is responsible. It was agreed at Cabinet that Leader of the Council, Councillor Douglas Reid, will invite the Transport Minister to East Ayrshire to discuss the matter further.
Councillor Reid said: “We are seeing far too many road casualties, and tragically too many deaths, occurring on the A76. More safety measures clearly need to be put in place to help prevent injury and loss of life, and I will be writing to the Transport Minister and Transport Scotland to ask them to come and take a look at the key blackspots so that a plan can be progressed to make them safer.
“We can also ask the Minister to visit the Bellfield Interchange, another Transport Scotland asset, where there are real capacity and safety issues. There is a significant conflict between strategic and local traffic that has implications for road safety, especially during peak evening hours, as well as pedestrian safety.
“We need to keep having discussions with the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland about how we can make headway with securing infrastructure investment at this vital strategic location.”
