Transport Scotland funding set to transform key site in Kilmarnock
A major funding award of £3.2m from Transport Scotland will act as a catalyst for the creation of an ambitious masterplan for Kilmarnock town centre. The funding will accelerate the transformation of the former multi-storey car park site, marking a significant milestone in the town’s regeneration plans.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council welcomed the news. He said: “The redevelopment of the multi-storey site has been a long-standing regeneration priority for Kilmarnock and this funding from Transport Scotland will allow us to move forward with our ambitious plans for the site.
“Planning permission has now been submitted to create a fantastic civic area which will incorporate a performance space, landscaping, environmental improvements, street furniture and an Active Mobility Hub to support the promotion of physical activity, green travel, and to help create a safe and welcoming gateway to the town.”
The plans include:
- amphitheatre tiered seating for performances
- dining seats adjacent to Foregate shops
- Active Mobility Hub to support cyclists and community safety
- urban benches
- trees for shade
- lighting improvements
The design plans also incorporate soft landscaping that will help to increase biodiversity, which is in keeping with the Council’s wider aspiration of ‘green corridors’ around the town. The plans will also allow users of the space to enjoy clear views of the historic viaduct.
If approved, the work will complement the newly refurbished bus station and the multi-million-pound redevelopment of the Palace Theatre and Concert Hall.
Councillor Reid added: “The demolition of the car park has brought new life and light into the north of Kilmarnock and we are excited about our plans to enhance this through the creation of an attractive new space that will make the town more connected, provide opportunities for cultural activities, and offer a more attractive environment for residents, visitors and businesses.
“The work is part of a wider transformational masterplan for the town centre. Collaborative working with the Neighbourhood Board, East Ayrshire Leisure, the Third Sector and local businesses means that ambitious projects like the redevelopment of the Palace Theatre and Concert Hall, and the regeneration of the White Tile building and Civic Centres South and North are also starting to take shape, acting as a catalyst for yet more exciting developments to come.”
Details of the developing masterplan for Kilmarnock will be shared in the new year.
